Humans were made to run - LONG!
This is an audio story from NPR leading up to the NYC Marathon about how and why we were made to run long distances. Good for your body and brain. (As if we didn't know that!)

Just one of those mornings.... I volunteered to work a 100 miler this weekend. I am sitting at my desk wondering why I have to sit here and earn a living and can't be training on the trails right now. Hard to focus after a great weekend.
Mike - I'd go with the Garmin. My garmin said 13.2 for my 1/2 yesterday, and I figure that since courses are generally measured on the tangents, that it is highly likely that I don't run the shortest route on any course. I figure if I took the extra…
And Carl, congrats on your new PR! I have to go for the distance PR's these days rather than time - which is why I now run primarily trail ultras. I did, however, beat my 30-yr-old daughter in the 1/2 today...not that I'm out to beat her, but there…
Ran a fun 1/2 marathon today - used it as a hilly training run. My first actual race since I turned 50! I'm attaching the elevation map from my garmin.
Thanks all for the comments but when I saw your comments to RW I missed it was me, so I updated with my name to make it easier for me.
Jenny as to just the beginning - I do like the distance and would like to do a 100 mile event but that is still w…
Good job RunWesty. I've done an Ultra50k and have one more on the books. I hope to make a 50miler next. I'm working the Pinhoti 100 miler in Alabama this weekend and hope that motivates me. YeeHaw.
Just finished my first 50 miler. I took it slow and had a blast. If you want to read my race report here it is: Surf the Murph 2009 and if you want to see a few pictures and a bit of race trivia, here is the link to that report
I love to run - I run road and trail races, but have recently decided that I like trails the best. I'm fairly new to ultrarunning, but I enjoy the ultras more than regular marathons.
It sounds like you will be more than prepared for your 100. Sorry about the links, it looks like the site put something extra info in them. AttackPoint Log mannaadventure.com
These should work.
I will be interested in hearing how your training goes and how you do. I am curious about a 24 hour race. If you write a report after you run it let me know so I can read it.
I am not really big into back to backs. Mainly because I just do not have time. Being away from my wife and daughter for big chunks of the weekend is hard on all of us.
Hey Jenny, What 100 are you running? Your comment gave me the idea to summarize my training in my blog. Sometime soon I will make a point to do this, as there is not a ton of info out there for training for a 100. It seams most people have their own ideas. Here is what I did in a nutshell: In the last 15 months I have run 4 50ks, 1 50 miler, and 1 70 miler, all on trails / fireroads / dirt roads. My last 50k was 3 weeks before MMT. I ran the 50 in November. Since january 1 I have done 10 runs of 20 or more miles and 4 runs of 30 or more miles, with one of the runs at just under 40 (on the 100 course). I have averaged 45 miles/week since then (I wish this were higher), My biggest week was 75 miles and I had 2 weeks under 20 (semi-planned rest weeks). I tried to run my long runs on trails and completed a tempo interval session and a speed interval session once per week.
Thats about it in a nutshell. I really hope that it is enough to get me through. I have been a lot faster in races so far this year than last so I think I will be in good shape.
Welcome to Just Finish, Jenny! I do some ultra events...but not running, YET! All mine have been on the ol' mtb. Again welcome and I look forward to communicating via the site!
