I am very blessed to be retired -- I know I'm only 56 (or will be a week from Friday) but post polio told me that it was time to leave full time work. My schedule is very flexible so there's not an issue with finding time to exercise - I'll admit that pain and fatigue could provide a wonderful excuse to not move if I let them but I know that I'm accountable here and have made a commitment to my health and fitness. I know that I inspire others by maintaining a health and fitness regimen no matter…

Another New England winter is upon us. The days are getting 'shorter' and the snow, ice and slush have taken over the landscape. Last year I was 'forced' to brave the elements to train for the 2009 Boston Marathon I had to also get creative by using the indoor track at Boston University to get miles into my legs (as a BU alumni I could pay only $10/day during the week to use the gym facilities). What keeps me motivated this year to maintain my health and fitness regimen? There is no marathon on…

Over the past 12 months I have learned, questioned, hurt, and laughed a lot. I beat myself down at times, pumped myself up at others, was inspired by many, encouraged a few, sealed some lasting friendships, and was honored to witness the victories of many I'll never see again. I have also launched some new dreams, some of them my own. Overall the challenge was about pacing, places...and people. More on all that later. THIS post is my Santa Barbara International Marathon report.…

Here's a new site worth paying attention to: NYCRuns.com. My friend Steve is starting up this site for runners in the New York area. It includes spaces for running groups, a local race calendar, running blogs and a running partner finder. I think it's a really cool idea. The New York running community is huge and goes way beyond just the NY Road Runners Club. There is definitely a need for a site to pull it all together

I thought my running days were over! As I worked out on my recumbent bike last week, my body was telling me it wanted to run again. During intervals I imagined doing hill training and was very nostalgic about marathon training. I began to feel the urge to run another marathon. Physical therapy for my cervical spine disease is winding down. I only go one day/week and I am reaping the incredible benefits of the discipline of doing daily exercises. I am learning so much about my body once again and…

So fall has come around Chicagoland with it is dark mornings and early evenings. This also brings the cooler weather. The combination, and a lack of attention to detail, created a strange situation for me.
I've got a dark pair of sweats pants that I've been using. Also, I recently lost my favorite sweat jacket, so I bought a new, blue zip-up hooded sweatshirt. I didn't realize until I was about to head outside that these combined to make a wonderful "Invisible Pedestrian" costume. I just didn't…

I haven't watched Extreme Makeover Home Edition in a very long time. On Sunday evenings, my husband and I have a guilty pleasure of watching The Amazing Race. At a couple of minutes past 8, a dear friend of mine (who has an incredible story all her own as a childhood cancer survivor) called and told me to turn on Extreme Makeover - they were featuring a polio survivor.
I needed a box of tissues to watch the show. James Terpenning had polio as an infant in Vietnam. He was rescued by the Air Force…

Hey y'all,
I ran across this awesome list "You might be a runner if..." that most of us can probably relate to:
http://www.runningintheusa.com/More/Default.aspx?Page=1
My favorite so far is "...it doesn't scare you to drink from a cup that some stranger hands you in the middle of the road."
It's a REALLY long list, but I'll bet the Just Finishers can come up with some new entries...

Today was Kickoff Day for Team In Training!!!
We met at UC Berkeley (Go Bears!) for the official start of the season and we got a lot of good info, including our workout schedules. We also heard from some honorees and their stories were very inspiring. I know my dad will be proud of me no matter what distance I run for him but now that I have decided to run with Team In Training I have a lot of people counting on me. I owe it to my team, my chapter, our honorees, and the Leukemia and Lymphoma S…

A running friend asked me recently how I do so many marathons without burning out. She wondered how all the training that goes into the effort doesn't make me crazy. She's no stranger to the game, having run five marys so far, with three more scheduled for the next month or so. However, for some reason, she wondered how I handle it all. So...here, for the first time ever, anywhere...here...are my "secrets".

I received the following email today from my dad:
Good Morning Sarah,
I know you don't want to hear it, but there will be no daily log. My depression is much stronger than I am. I'm tired of all these dreams I have only to lose out to the depression. I know that I will never be able to move out of this area and will never be able to focus on my health. Everytime I get a good start, something happens and I sink back into a deep depression. I seriously cannot handle anymore setbacks or failures.…

This post is dedicated to Kevin Green and Pamela Robbins
Congratulations to the finishers of the New York City Marathon today including two of my cyber friends Pamela Robbins and Kevin Green. I watched the race throughout the day on line. I tracked the results for Kevin and Pamela; I remembered how my friends were concerned that they could not track me on line and that is the feeling I felt when I did not see results for Pamela after the 15 mile mark. Then my daughter suggested I click on next…
